The short version

Why Probolinggo is the closest start

Probolinggo’s train station and bus terminal sit 40–50 km — about 1.5–2 hours — from Cemoro Lawang, the village on the edge of the Tengger caldera where every Bromo jeep excursion begins.

That cuts travel time against Surabaya or Malang, especially if you arrive by train. We pre-arrange the transfer, a Cemoro Lawang homestay and a private jeep through licensed local operators, so you skip the waiting, the haggling and the inflated prices of local brokers (calo).

Getting to Cemoro Lawang

Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang: three ways up

A picturesque drive from the flatlands into cooler volcanic highlands, depending on traffic and road conditions.
01

Private car

Pre-booked, with an experienced local driver, straight from Probolinggo Station or your hotel to your Cemoro Lawang accommodation. No waiting, no haggling.
02

Public minivan (Colt)

From the bus terminal, about IDR 35,000–50,000 per person, negotiable. Leaves only when full — sometimes hours — and stops at the village entrance.
03

Ojek (motorbike taxi)

The quickest way up for solo travellers with little luggage, but not ideal in the dark or cold. Negotiable, and dearer than a Colt.

For early departures or late arrivals, we advise a pre-arranged private transfer.

Where you sleep

Cemoro Lawang homestays: functional, not five-star

Cemoro Lawang is where you rest for a few crucial hours before the pre-dawn start. Rooms are modest, reflecting the remote, high-altitude setting: a warm bed, basic amenities and often hot water.

At around 2,217 m the nights are chilly and heating is limited, so many guesthouses offer blankets and hot drinks. We can include a practical homestay from vetted local guesthouses near the jeep departures.

What to expect

  • Clean, safe guesthouses close to early jeep departures
  • Simple rooms with shared bathrooms, up to more private bungalows
  • Often hot water, plus blankets and hot drinks

Don’t expect

  • Five-star resort comforts
  • Much heating on a cold night

Preparation

What to bring for a night at Cemoro Lawang

A little preparation goes a long way — temperatures at Penanjakan before sunrise can be surprisingly cold.
01

Layers

A base layer, a fleece or sweater and a windproof, waterproof jacket. Add a warm hat, gloves and thick socks.
02

Footwear

Sturdy walking shoes or light hiking boots for uneven ground, sand and the steps.
03

Small cash

Small rupiah notes for hot drinks, snacks or a horse ride. ATMs are limited once you leave Probolinggo.
04

Camera gear

Extra batteries — the cold drains them faster. A tripod helps for sunrise photography.
05

Headlamp, snacks, water

A headlamp keeps your hands free in the dark. Pack high-energy snacks and enough water for the early start.
06

Health

Some people feel mild headaches or dizziness at this altitude. Stay hydrated; with respiratory issues, consult your doctor first.

The dry season (April to October) generally offers the clearest skies and best visibility. More in our packing list.

FAQ

Bromo tour from Probolinggo FAQ

Private vs. Shared Jeep Options: Which is Right for Your Bromo Tour?

Private suits families, couples and groups who value comfort and flexibility: your own pickup time, more space and pickup at your homestay. A private jeep runs about IDR 650,000–850,000 per jeep for up to 6. Shared jeeps, about IDR 150,000–200,000 per person, suit solo budget travellers who don’t mind fixed timings.

Why Book Your Mount Bromo Tour with Bali Premium Trip?

You book directly with our own reservations team and skip the inflated prices of local brokers (calo). Jeeps, guides and permits go through vetted, licensed local operators — we don’t own park concessions. We are private-first, from your Probolinggo transfer to your jeep, and honest about the cold, the crowds and the real costs.

Considering a Bromo+Ijen Combo?

Many travellers add Ijen Crater, known for its blue flames and turquoise acidic lake. Our multi-day Bromo + Ijen itineraries handle the transfers, guides and accommodation between the two volcanoes. See the Bromo + Ijen combo tour.

How long is the drive from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang?

About 40–50 km, typically 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. A pre-booked private car is the most comfortable option, especially with luggage or a late arrival. Public minivans (Colt) are cheaper but leave only when full; an ojek suits solo travellers with little luggage.

What time does the jeep leave Cemoro Lawang for sunrise?

Either around 01:00–02:00 for a prime spot at Penanjakan 1, or around 03:00–03:30 for a little more sleep, when your driver may choose King Kong Hill or Seruni instead. We typically recommend the earlier start for first-time visitors, but tailor it to you.

How cold is it at Penanjakan before sunrise?

Very cold. Temperatures before dawn can drop to near 0°C, sometimes lower. Bring layers, a thick jacket, hat, gloves and perhaps a scarf. Local vendors at the viewpoints sell hot drinks.
