The short version

What a Bromo Ijen combo actually involves

A Bromo Ijen tour links three moments in one route: a pre-dawn jeep to a Penanjakan-area viewpoint for Bromo sunrise, the sea of sand to the crater rim, and a night hike up Kawah Ijen for the blue fire and its turquoise crater lake.

Most people choose a fast 2D1N with very little sleep, or a 3D2N — our default — with real rest between the two volcanoes and room for the savanna or a waterfall. Routes start in Surabaya, Malang, Probolinggo or Bali and usually end in Banyuwangi or back in Surabaya. Licensed jeep drivers, Ijen guides, gas masks and park permits come through vetted local partners.

The big decision

2D1N or 3D2N?

The same highlights, very different sleep. The challenge isn’t the distance so much as back-to-back short nights.

Our default

The 3D2N Bromo + savanna + Ijen, day by day

Option A, at a balanced pace: only one true all-nighter, and a proper night’s sleep between the two volcanoes.
  1. Day 1 · 11:00–14:00

    Pickup and drive to Bromo

From Surabaya or Malang: 3–4 hours with a lunch stop. A late-afternoon stroll to village viewpoints, early dinner, rest.
  2. Day 2 · 03:00–05:30

    Sunrise, Penanjakan area

Jeep pickup at 03:00–03:30, then wait for first light. Tea and coffee stalls are usually open at the viewpoint.
  3. Day 2 · 06:00–08:00

    Sea of sand and crater

Cross the sea of sand and hike up to the Bromo crater rim.
  4. Day 2 · 08:00–11:00

    Savanna, then breakfast

Jeep on to the savanna / Teletubbies Hills — green in the wet season, golden-brown in the dry. Back for a late breakfast and shower.
  5. Day 2 · 11:00–17:00

    Drive towards Ijen

5–6 hours with a lunch stop. Check in around Banyuwangi or the Ijen plateau for a proper night’s sleep.
  6. Day 3 · 00:00–03:00

    Up Kawah Ijen

Leave for Paltuding trailhead, then hike to the crater rim. Optional descent to the blue fire only if it is safe.
  7. Day 3 · 05:30–06:30

    Sunrise over the lake

Sunrise views across the crater lake, if visibility cooperates.
  8. Day 3 · 07:00 onwards

    Down and onward

Walk down by 08:30 for breakfast. Late-morning drop in Banyuwangi, at the Bali ferry, or 7–8 hours back to Surabaya.

Swap the savanna for Madakaripura or Tumpak Sewu — see the route options below.

Short on time

The fast 2D1N, hour by hour

The shortest practical combo that still gives you Bromo sunrise and the Ijen blue fire: two short nights in a row and two hikes above 2,300 m.
  1. Day 1 · 15:00–17:00

    Evening pickup

Hotel, airport or station in Surabaya or Malang, then 3–4 hours to Cemara Lawang or a similar rim village. Early night.
  2. Day 2 · 02:30–05:45

    Bromo sunrise

Jeep at 02:30–03:00, 30–45 minutes up to a Penanjakan-area viewpoint. Sunrise roughly 05:00–05:45, depending on the month.
  3. Day 2 · 06:00–09:00

    Sea of sand and crater

Jeep down, then walk or ride a horse (optional, extra cost) to the staircase: 250+ steps to the rim.
  4. Day 2 · 09:00–10:00

    Late breakfast

Back to the lodge by jeep for breakfast and a quick shower.
  5. Day 2 · 10:30–16:30

    Bromo to Ijen

Around 5–6 hours including lunch, mostly paved with some winding sections. Check in late afternoon; aim for 3–4 hours’ sleep.
  6. Day 2 · 23:00–00:00

    To Paltuding

The Ijen trailhead is a 60–90 minute drive from most Banyuwangi hotels.
  7. Day 3 · 00:30–04:00

    Ijen blue fire

About 3 km, mostly uphill, usually 1.5–2 hours. Into the crater only if the trail is open and gas levels are safe.
  8. Day 3 · 05:00–07:30

    Sunrise and finish

Sunrise over the lake if visibility cooperates, then down to the car park. On to Banyuwangi (1–1.5 h), the Bali ferry, or Surabaya (7–8 h).

Landing in Surabaya after 10:00, or know you don’t handle sleep deprivation well? We usually recommend shifting to 3D2N.

per person · 2–3 guests

Solo roughly US$520–780; 4–6 guests roughly US$260–420. Bromo and Ijen, with either the savanna or a waterfall.

Indicative ranges, last verified June 2026. They shift with hotel level, high vs low season and pick-up/drop-off cities. The lower end usually means simpler guesthouses and a Surabaya start and finish; Tumpak Sewu, higher-end hotels or Surabaya-to-Bali routing push you up the range. Route options

Which way round, and what to add

Both directions cover the same core highlights. Your entry city, ferry or flight times decide which summit comes first.
01

Bromo first

From Surabaya, Malang or Probolinggo: Bromo is 3–4 hours away, then Ijen and Banyuwangi for the Bali ferry — or back to Surabaya.
02

Ijen first

From Bali or Banyuwangi: cross on the Gilimanuk–Ketapang ferry, hike Ijen, then traverse to Bromo and finish in Surabaya or Malang.
03

Add Madakaripura

A 3D2N option: allow 2–3 hours including the walk in, through calf- to thigh-deep water with spray overhead.
04

Add Tumpak Sewu

More demanding, with steep, sometimes slippery sections. Bromo + Tumpak Sewu fits 3D2N; with Ijen too, we shape a 4D3N loop.
05

Savanna and villages

More time on the savanna, at Whispering Sand and in smaller Tengger villages, instead of rushing straight to Ijen.
06

Banyuwangi loop

With 4–5 days: Bromo and Ijen, then extra time around Banyuwangi’s beaches and forests before crossing to Bali.

Madakaripura access can change after heavy rain, so we re-check conditions a day or two before your date. More in our Bromo Ijen 3-day itinerary.

Inclusions

What a private Bromo Ijen tour covers

Transparent, so there are no “mandatory extras” mid-trip.

Included

  • Private AC vehicle and local driver for all overland transfers
  • 4×4 jeeps at Bromo for sunrise, the sea of sand and, if planned, the savanna
  • Licensed guide at Kawah Ijen — one usually handles 1–4 guests
  • Gas masks for Ijen, issued by your guide
  • National park and parking fees for Bromo and Kawah Ijen
  • Simple to comfortable 2–3 star guesthouses or hotels, unless you upgrade
  • Daily breakfast; early breakfast packs on summit days where possible
  • Pick-up and drop-off at agreed airports, stations, hotels or the ferry port

Not included / optional

  • Lunches and dinners
  • Horse rental across the sea of sand — budget around US$10–20 one way, cash only
  • Porters or a “trolley taxi” at Ijen, paid on the spot
  • Travel insurance, medical costs and personal gear
  • Bali hotel nights, or extra nights before or after the tour

Every quote lists inclusions line by line. No add-on is compulsory: a horse or porter offered on site is purely your choice.

Fitness and safety

How hard are Bromo and Ijen?

Bromo: roughly 1.5–2 km across flat volcanic sand, then about 250 concrete steps — 45–60 minutes one way at a casual pace. Ijen: around 3 km from Paltuding with 500–600 m of gain, wide but steep in places; 1.5–2 hours to the rim.

If you can walk 8–10 km in a day on hilly terrain at home, you’ll likely cope. The real difference is altitude and the night-time start — and nobody will rush you.

Good to know

  • Doable for most reasonably active adults — but you will feel it
  • Full tour with crater descent: teenagers and up who are used to hiking
  • Older guests or knee issues: trekking poles and a slower pace help a lot

Be cautious with

  • Uncontrolled asthma or serious heart conditions
  • Strong sensitivity to sulfur smell
  • Very young children — no Ijen crater descent

Real conditions

Weather, cold, crowds and closures

Not “alpine” in the European sense, but still cold and often windy before dawn.
01

Dry season, May–Oct

Night temperatures at the viewpoints often 3–10°C, colder with wind chill. Skies often clearer, but never guaranteed.
02

Rainy season, Nov–Apr

A bit milder, but showers roll in quickly and mud on trails and access roads is common.
03

The blue fire

Best in the dark on drier, clearer nights, but wind and gas density decide. Some nights it’s veiled by sulfur smoke.
04

Crowds

Weekends and holidays get busy at Kuripan and King Kong Hill. Weekday starts help; in peak periods drivers steer to calmer viewpoints.
05

Park closures

Eruption alerts can keep you off Bromo’s crater; high gas keeps Ijen on the rim. We follow official updates and adjust.
06

Pack for cold

Three layers, long trousers, grippy closed shoes, beanie, buff and gloves — many guests regret skipping gloves. Plus a headlamp and rupiah cash.

Main luggage stays in your private vehicle during the hikes. Full kit list: what to wear and pack for Bromo.

FAQ

Bromo + Ijen combo FAQ

Is the Bromo Ijen 2D1N tour too rushed?

For some people, yes. You get the key highlights but sleep in fragments: a short night before Bromo, a nap between the two, then a night hike at Ijen. If you function on limited sleep, it’s manageable. If you get headaches or feel unwell without a full night’s rest, 3D2N is safer and more enjoyable.

Can we see the Ijen blue fire all year round?

The blue fire is continuous, but seeing it clearly depends on darkness, wind direction and gas density, and park authorities may restrict crater access on some nights. Plan it as an attempt, not a guarantee: some trips only view the glow from the rim, or focus on sunrise over the lake instead.

What’s the best starting point for a Bromo Ijen tour from Surabaya?

Most guests flying into Surabaya start late morning or early afternoon, drive 3–4 hours to Bromo, sleep, and catch sunrise the next day. Then 5–6 hours to Ijen, ending in Banyuwangi or back in Surabaya. Going straight to sunrise after a late-night arrival is generally too tiring and risks missed connections. See Bromo from Surabaya.

How cold will it be at Bromo and Ijen?

Expect early-morning temperatures around 3–10°C at the Bromo viewpoints and the Ijen rim, colder in a strong breeze. Once the sun is up and you’re descending, it warms quickly to 15–20°C or more. Two to three layers, a hat and gloves usually keep people comfortable.

Are private Bromo Ijen tours suitable for children?

Many families do Bromo with school-age and older children; the jeep rides and viewpoints are usually a hit. Ijen is more demanding, with the night hike and sulfur, so we only recommend the full tour with crater descent for teenagers used to hiking. With younger children, a Bromo-only trip often works better.
